From Exile to Advocacy: a Tibetan-Australian Journey

Registration for this event opens on 27 July 2026

Presenter: Tsering Tsomo

This interactive U3A session explores the life and work of a Tibetan humanitarian migrant who arrived in Australia with her husband and young son after being born and raised in India by Tibetan refugee parents.

Drawing on more than two decades of experience in human rights research, journalism, women's advocacy and leadership as Director of the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy, the presenter will examine themes of exile, identity, democracy and resilience.

Participants will gain an insight into the Tibetan refugee experience, the role of civil society in defending human rights and the challenges and opportunities of rebuilding a life in regional Australia.

The session will combine personal narrative, historical context and guided discussion, encouraging participants to analyse migration, cultural adaptation and advocacy through both lived experience and broader social and political frameworks.  It is suitable for learners interested in international affairs, human rights, migration studies and contemporary Asia.

Registration is free but a gold coin is required to attend the session.
