The Life and Times of Banjo Paterson

Registration for this event opens on 16 February 2026

Presenter: Denis Simond

Banjo Paterson is considered to be one of Australia's greatest Poets, best remembered for penning "Waltzing Matilda" and "The Man from Snowy River".

These four sessions will introduce a selection of poems and short stories and place them in the context of his life and times.

We will explore:

  • His Biography and background
  • His early works and the Outback along with his Town Life and War experience
  • The Bulletin debates with Henry Lawson
  • Banjo's Bush Ballads and Sporting Life

The programs ends with "Dead Men Talking", a play, in which Henry Lawson and Banjo, while in the Leviticus Bar at the Gates Of Heaven prior to entering them, discuss their lives together in the late 1800s and early 1900's.
