China Today

Registration for this event opens on 3 November 2025

Presenter: Ann Brewster

China's rise to power over the past few decades, marks one of the most significant transformations in modern global history.  Now, underpinned by its enormous economic and military strength, it is assertively seeking a central role in creating the international order to its liking.  Its growing influence continues to impact global trade, diplomacy and power dynamics.

Over two sessions, we will look at how and why China is using economic and military power, territorial aggression, 'grey zone' tactics, 'soft power', cyber power and technology, to become a world power, particularly in competition with the US. The power of the Communist Party and President Xi Jinping, the influence of China in the United Nations, particularly on human rights and China's internal challenges, along with Australia's relationship with China will be covered in the second session.
