Presenter: Drew Porter
In 1954 at the age of 14, I bought my first Frank Sinatra record - a Capitol 45rpm "Young at Heart" and still one of the best. About 30 years later and one of the last 12" on vinyl, he recorded "LA is my Lady" with the great Quincy Jones backing. Finally the innovative Duets 1 & 2 CDs with all the old standards. These were mixed with a collaboration of contemporary performers using modern technology.
In the in-between years and earlier, Sinatra presented some of his best work. Notably with some fine arrangements and backing with Tommy Dorsey, Alex Stordahl, Gordon Jenkins, Nelson Riddle...the penultimate years, Billy May and Count Basie. Aside with these big bands (even the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra conducted by Frank Junior), Sinatra could still swing with the smaller combos EG: the Red Norvo Quintet on the 1959 Australian tour, between 1955-1991.
And so the journey continues with some Sinatra memorabilia on display.
