How to Love a Stranger - Working with Refugees

Registration for this event opens on 8 September 2025

Presenter: Deidre Moulden

In 2005 Deidre Moulden was appointed Volunteer Coordinator for the Riverina.  In 2007 Deidre was appointed Manager for this program.  The provider was St Vincent de Paul.

Deidre was responsible for resettling refugees in Wagga, Griffith, Young, Albury, Wodonga, Leeton and Narrandera.  Families arrived from Burma, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa, Bhutan and the Yazidi communities.  She was responsible for recruiting volunteers to support these families, setting up their houses with all furniture and furnishings and ensuring their general well being.

The program was, according to the government, the best in the country.  St Vincent de Paul were partnered with the Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga.  They provided Case Workers to each family or individual and organised housing in the private sector.

The best job in the world!  Not many people get to do the work Deidre was able to do.
