Remembering my Mother's Family

Registration for this event opens on 2 June 2025

Presenter:  Mardi Walker

My Grandparents, my Uncle (6yrs) and my Mother (3yrs) came to Australia in 1952 on a ship , as displaced persons post the war in Europe.

My Grandmother was Slovenian and my Grandfather, Czechoslovakian. Both had spent years as political prisoners in concentration camps after standing up against the German Regimes taking over their countries. Arriving at Bonegilla Migrant Camp in the January heat with only 2 suitcases, they had left behind all their families in Europe, never being able to return.

My Grandfather had a bounty on his head post war as an Anarchist. Even though the war was over, the Nazi Regime was still well and alive in many parts of Europe. My Grandmother was a Spy, initially against Mussolini’s army, as they were trying to beat Hitler in the overtaking of Yugoslavia.

I look forward to sharing their experiences with you all.
