Our Toxic World
Registration for this event opens on 5 May 2025
Presenter: Kathleen Skinner
These presentations will continue to explore the evidence for effects of toxicants on health, both mental and physical.
Session 1 will provide an update on developments covering : a) effects of blue green algae on motor neurone disease ; b) pesticides withdrawn from sale; c) microplastics as neurotoxins; d) gut effects on mental health; e) Tasmanian salmon ; and f) fatbergs, sewage and biosolids disposal.
Session 2 will consider the role of corporations and government in the regulation of toxicant approval for sale. Corporations need confidentiality to develop new products in a competitive market but have a long history in downplaying risks to health. Examples include tobacco, asbestos, lead, forever chemicals, pesticides, mercury and ultra processed food. We will investigate how evidence is suppressed and what governments and individuals can do to counter the effects of vested interests. There will be time for discussion and questions.
