It was 1963 and my fourth year teaching infants in Victorian country schools. An advertisement for teachers to go to New Guinea came to my notice. I applied ! Three months later I was in a Catalina Flying Boat on my way from Port Moresby to Kerema, the administration centre for the Gulf District Papua NG……..a place with no airstrip, shops, cars or paved streets with a climate in which you constantly dripped perspiration. I was the new head teacher of the T-School……..a school with dirt floors, no doors and no glass windows. Only blackboards and desks. Just the beginning of 10 wonderful years!!
