    Pickleball at PCYC

    Presenter:  Wendy Taylor

Pickleball is a mix of tennis, table tennis and badminton.  Pickleball is fun, social and friendly.  It is played with a paddle and using a perforated plastic ball over a tennis-type net on a badminton-sized court.

By playing pickleball, seniors can improve their balance and coordination, reducing their risk of falls and injuries.  Pickleball can be mentally stimulating because it requires focus, strategy and quick decision making.

To play pickleball at PCYC, you will need to be a member of the club.  Membership for U3A pickleball players is free.  However, you will be asked to complete a manual membership form available at the front desk of the PCYC (not online) and will then receive a PCYC tag to be used for admission to the club.

There is a weekly court fee of $8.50.

    Table Tennis

    Presenter:  Ann Brewster

Table Tennis is a sociable, fun sport for two or four players. Great for hand-eye coordination and flexibility. This is especially important as we age because tasks such as writing and driving a car are dependent on coordination and flexibility! The activity increases heart rate and contributes to good blood circulation. The game is easy to learn; however, players need to be confident of their mobility. All equipment is supplied, and the venue is air conditioned. Comfortable clothing and supportive footwear to be worn. Bring a water bottle.

    Qigong at PCYC

    Presenter: Sandra Chapman

Qigong (pronounced Chi Gong) is an ancient Chinese medicine practice designed to support your body's ability to maintain good health. "Qi" = energy/breath/life force; "Gong" = work. Qigong combines intentional movement with deep breathing, resulting in a calmness that comes from a focussed mind and relaxed body as we work through the movements. As we do move our body, we encourage a constant flow of Qi (energy) and blood circulation through the joints, muscles and everything in between. With regular practice Qigong will increase strength, mobility, improve circulation and calm your mind. Come and join me for 45 minutes of relaxing movement. Wear comfortable loose clothing and flat shoes.

    Snakes awareness, precautions, first aid

    Presenter:  Gordon Murray

Snakes are common in Wagga and surrounds.  Indeed, they are common over most of Australia. Many have potent venom that can kill, others do not but can inflict painful bites.  We react instinctively with fear when meeting a snake.  This is normal.  However, snake phobia is learnt.  Knowing how snakes behave and how to avoid snake bite makes fear manageable and you may even get to marvel at these amazing creatures.

I will talk of my experience as a reptile handler with WIRES 25 years ago.  What precautions to take around the home, what to wear when entering snake country, and what first aid to apply if bitten.  Snakes generally try to avoid us, but will attack if cornered or provoked.  If you have a pressure bandage, bring it along to practise its use.

Introduction to Neuroscience Through Lived Experience

    Presenter:  Garry Whittaker

With over 30 years experience as a learning and development professional, Garry Whittaker has been the Regional Manager for Training Services within the NSW Department of Education since 2014.
In 2020, Garry suffered a severe Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) from a suspected physical assault resulting in aphasia - an acquired impairment of language generating marked difficulties in naming and word finding abilities - and epilepsy.

Following the injury, Garry used an evidence-based cognitive computerised brain training routine integrating neuroscience along with standard allied health practices to support his vocational rehabilitation and successful return to work. He is now a passionate advocate for how well-being can be enhanced by including brain and physical fitness in everyday living to maintain and improve our cognitive health.

    My Life Jenny O'Brien

    Presenter: Jenny O'Brien

Come along for a tour through the life of a young adventurous girl growing up in Wagga during the beginning of the 'baby boom'. Her path takes her into the turbulent Sixties in Sydney, nursing at St Vincent's, an encounter with rock royalty, and eventually moving to the USA where she lands in the middle of the Civil Rights movement, challenging all the prior values and experiences of the socially conformist decade.  Marrying a Native American Vietnam Veteran leads her into throes of Nixon, Vietnam Veterans against the War, The FBI, and the American Indian Movement.  Returning in the late seventies as a single working mother she embraces the challenges of the 80s AIDS crisis, increasing women's health and safety, and being on the forefront of support for grieving parents.  This is a journey not to be missed.

    Retrieving Memories - CSU Archives

    Presenter: Wayne Doubleday

The Archives has an extensive collection of historical photos of people from Wagga's past.  Unfortunately, many faces have yet to be identified.  This  gives us the chance to enjoy an interesting and fun morning in the Archives with morning tea provided.

We will spend our time sitting around tables viewing a selection of photos and where possible, identifying people from the past.  These photos will focus on different aspects of life in historical Wagga.

It is a wonderful opportunity to remember and chat about the past and also assist the Archive staff in adding extra details to their valuable collection.

Ten Wonderful Years in New Guinea

    Presenter: Sue Lidden

It was 1963 and my fourth year teaching infants in Victorian country schools. An advertisement for teachers to go to New Guinea came to my notice. I applied !
Three months later I was in a Catalina Flying Boat on my way from Port Moresby to Kerema, the administration centre for the Gulf District Papua NG……..a place with no airstrip, shops, cars or paved streets with a climate in which you constantly dripped perspiration.
I was the new head teacher of the T-School……..a school with dirt floors, no doors and no glass windows. Only blackboards and desks.
Just the beginning of 10 wonderful years!!

Health Benefits of Nature Connection for Human Beings

Presenter:  Jenni Wines - Mental Health Clinician in the Disaster Recovery Team - MLH

It is the quality of meaningful moments we spend in nature, rather than just the quality of minutes.

Nature connectedness is strongly linked to greater well-being.  It assists emotional and nervous system regulation, creates mental resilience, sense of worth and overall happiness.  Nature connection is a basic psychological need and essential pillar of health.

The impact of the 2019/2020 bushfires, Covid-19 and flooding left the Snowy Valley communities with heightened levels of anxiety and stress.

Snowy Valley's 'Nature Wellness Drive' developed, as a community initiative, seeking to rekindle our deep longing to reconnect with the natural world.  As nature recovers the community recovers.  It is designed to unlock the health and healing benefits of nature, through self-guided experiences and interactive installations.

Restorative and protective benefits of nature for well-being in adults and children are too compelling to ignore!

    Living City - Wagga Zoo

    Presenter: Wagga Wagga City Council

In the middle of Wagga’s Botanic Gardens, you’ll find a little Zoo. You’ve seen lots of kids there – now it’s time for the Big (U3A) Kids’ Tour!

This one-hour tour will take us around the recently renovated Zoo precinct. We might meet a dingo, or a nice slithery olive python (are you game to pat it?). You might be the one to feed a cow – or a camel. Will the sleepy wombat appear? The tour will end in the wonderful free-flight aviary.

Your gold coin donation will support the work of the Zoo.

After the U3A tour, you may wish to visit the café for an optional cuppa or lunch.

    Good Son – Bad Son

    Presenter:  Frank O'Rourke

Wagga-born-and-raised local historian Frank O’Rourke will present two parallel stories, each with fascinating Wagga connections – the presentation titled ‘Good Son – Bad Son’. Both stories coincidentally involve the Wagga-raised sons of two main event middleweight boxers. The ‘Good Son’ graduated in Law and ended up as the visiting District Court Judge in Wagga. The artistically talented ‘Bad Son’ became one of Wagga’s most infamous former citizens, spending nearly 50 years of his life in gaol. Frank will outline amazing coincidences relating to each story – and some remarkable connections he discovered to his own family, as well as to three famous murder cases of the 1930s. One of these murder cases occurred in Wagga, with the investigation being sensationally reported world-wide and launched the outstanding career of a Wagga-based detective. Frank has previously delivered this presentation to a Canberra audience – it being appreciated for extensive research, with many interesting twists and turns.
